I am getting excited!

I found this excited little chipmunk HERE. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and let me tell you, this little guy says it all!

We are just ten days away from getting on an airplane and flying home to Charleston, SC. And not just home, but to move into our brand new home!! It honestly feels like I have waited my entire life for this one moment. And I can hardly wait to share all the excitement, hard work...and every part of my journey to create a beautiful place for my family to call home with all of you!

Those who know me well would likely tell you I am a type "A" personality. Wikipedia defines my personality as ambitious, aggressive, business like, controlling, highly competitive and tightly wound.

Now this is where I declare my husband, Mr.K to be the classic type "B"....patient, relaxed, easy going and at times lacks an overriding sense of urgency.(wikipedia)

I must agree that opposites attract! He is my calming factor. The one person, other than my father, who can tell me to relax and trust that everything will be fine. Everything will work out. Just take one step at a time. Start and eventually you will finish.

Your wondering why I'm sharing all this with you? Well here is my type A to do list:

Pack up my things.
Pack up my children's things.
Clean and pack up the house here in Grand Cayman.
Buy our return tickets(with the shortest layover possible, but a connection I will make with the children in tow as I am solo while Mr.K is on business)
Arrange delivery of our stored items to be delivered to the new house.
Hire a moving company to bring everything into the house.
Buy a washer and dryer(thinking the LG front loading steam combo?)
Unpack, clean and put everything in it's proper place.
Hang temporary window dressings for privacy.
Seal all tile grout and shower glass.
Power wash the exterior of the house and paint.
Paint the interior of the house

The list goes on and on...........

OK, this is when I seek my therapy! House Beautiful!

I'll leave you with this last photo of my 3 year old son; he finds joy in everything and constantly tells me "it's a beautiful day Mommy"! Yes, I say, it is a beautiful day!

Children's Den/Guest Bedroom

A while back I posted about a design idea I had for a home office AND guest room.(HERE). The idea was a bit crazy, but I still think it could have been neat.

Well here we are now with a new house and a new plan! The picture below is the room we are thinking will make a perfect children's den/guest room. The walls of our house are concrete so we are researching Murphy Beds. There are three walls that will allow for a queen size MBed to rest against. They are labeled as A, B and C below.

While I am slowly warming up to the idea of having a Murphy bed, I felt their was a void in it's design. Until I saw this...

At the Closet Factory. the style is a bit too traditional for our room, but the idea is fantastic! After all, although our guests may only use our guest room for about 1/4 of an entire year, I want them to feel welcome and comfortable.

So when the cabinet transforms into a bed it will have tons of style and comfort!

And in my world, that is perfection!!

My favorite Charleston neighborhoods- Part 1

I had a lovely conversation with a woman today while our children were playing at a local indoor play gym. She and her husband are thinking they may possibly move from Grand Cayman to a coastal community in the United States. Well, let's just say....off I went about how great Charleston, SC is and how much I love the area!

The only thing I was missing was a flip book. Or something I could show her. We all know a picture is worth a thousand words. So that inspired me to write a mini "tour book" of some of my favorite Charleston neighborhoods.

Kitchen Dining.......

There are so many different styles of ceiling lights to choose from it can leave your mind all boggled and confused.

Willow Decor was very kind to send out a post today featuring Acrobaleno. And that is how I was inspired!!!! It broke my designer block and now I think I'm on to something good.

Happy Mother's Day!

I wish you all a very Happy Mother's Day! This is truly a very important holiday that should be celebrated and maintained as one of the most important days of the year!

Before I was a Mom......

I thought about me.
What was I going to do next weekend?
What restaurant did I want to try next?

Before I was a Mom.....

I worried about-
My hair not turning out the way I wanted it to after a visit to the salon.
Not being able to meet my friends for drinks because I had to work late.

Before I was a Mom.....
I didn't know the feeling of honest pure unconditional love.
Pure and true.

Before I was a Mom....
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night to make sure all was safe and sound.
I had never known the comfort, joy, challenge, reward and gratification of being a mom.

Becoming a Mom is positively the best gift I have ever received and I am forever grateful. Each day, whether it be exhausting or exhilarating, my love for my children grows stronger than the day before.

My two children are my everything and I am proud to be called, Mom!

Have a glorious Mother's Day and celebrate those who call you their Mom.

Haint Blue

I was visiting over at Design Chic. Beth and Kristy were posting about blue ceilings because they are going to be creating a playroom for one very lucky new baby boy!

This topic got me thinking about some research I had done a while ago about porch ceilings being painted blue. Why? Who? Where? When?…..and most important…..what is that perfect color of blue??

Well here in Charleston there seems to be one main reason (historically or not) why people paint their porch ceilings blue. Haints (ghosts)! It is believed that these spirits have not yet left our world and are “stuck” in a non-physical space. The tale makes me think of Ebenezer Scrooge and Jacob Marley in a Christmas Carol.

Haint blue is believed to confuse the poor spirits. They can not cross water, so by painting anything from porch ceilings, porch floors, window shutters or even entire houses, these guys can not enter your house! Sounds reasonable to me!

Here are some of my favorite haint blue color choices:

Savannah Haint Blue-Light- a greenish blue color

Ohio Haint Blue-light This color was taken directly from the walls of Prospect Place in Dresden, Ohio. It is a sophisticated calming and reflective blue.

Now let me give credit to and share the best source I have found out there, to this day, for finding the perfect haint blue color! I first read Lori Sawaya’s article HERE. She is the principal color strategist and writes the blog Color Budz. I highly recommend a visit or two if you want to gain some very valuable color knowledge. She is the expert of all experts when it comes to color.

Starting over.....

I was starting to think I had my design plan all figured out. Then we decided to buy a house and put building on hold. I'm not complaining though because I love a challenge and the work (fun) that goes with it.

Here are some new lights I have found.

I want to replace the light hanging in the kitchen dining room. I will be putting up for sale in May. I will take some better pictures of it when we get to Charleston. It is a beautiful well made light and brand new. I just have a different style in mind.

Z Gallerie is a must visit if you have not been over there yet. They offer chic designer home decor to the general public at very affordable prices.

Croft & Little is one of my favorite lighting stores and you are sure to find a light you love over there. They too are always offering discounts which suit today's savvy buyer.

If the Easter bunny is coming to your house this weekend, have a glorious holiday. My kids can't believe he'll find us this year even though we are on an island! So cute at ages 5 & 3.....

The “New” Magnolia House!!

It has been a long journey! Our family will finally be moving back to Charleston, SC and we will be moving into our new house!

We decided to buy rather than build when we found this house. This is a newly built home by Southern Structures of Charleston, SC. They are one of the few contractors in the Charleston area who feel concrete is the best available material to building strong eco friendly homes. Visit them HERE!

AK-Magnolia {Family} House- Kitchen Plan

Alright….lets first focus! (“I try and tell myself”) lol Should my dream kitchen have function; before or after beauty?? Well, I have decided this design will feature a beautiful kitchen oozing with function!

My last post about the future Magnolia Family House featured the utility space of the house. In the design there is a laundry room, locker room, powder room and a scullery. You can view it HERE. I’m searching for an appropriate name to give my multi-functional room. It is going to be a tuff one, so if anyone has any ideas, please share! I would be very grateful.

Now it’s time to add the kitchen on to the plan! It is located right next to the…lets call it “the utility room”. (just for now…)

Kitchen Plan

First things first…the “needs” list. This is a list of the necessary features I and my family will need to run a happy smooth working kitchen.(that we will LOVE…for many years!)

1. A Farmhouse Sink (or two??)

This sink style is one of the elements you’ll find in a country kitchen. While I love the idea of a country kitchen, I am slowly warming up to more modern styling. I am going to attempt to create a kitchen that has a style that will stand the “test of time”. The room should reflect a “candy stores selection” of styles. AND be cohesive…is that confusing?? (well, lets move on….shall we?)

This idea comes from holding many parties at previous houses we have lived in. Everyone always wants to be in the kitchen! I find it rather funny. All day I spend cleaning up the house eagerly awaiting for my guests to arrive. And when they do, where do you think they head to?? Yes, the kitchen! Even if we try and pull them away, this is where everyone feels most comfortable. So….I asked myself why??

Answer: They either want to be helpful or simply want to visit with me while I prepare the meal.

Well, alright then. We’ll start off by adding two kitchen sinks and a prep sink in the island. Now I can be washing up and so can someone else! Or I can be prepping some veggie’s and there are two sinks free for other purposes! Done! So in this next photo I can see my two lovely children, each at a sink, helping mommy clean up after dinner! (so I can dream right?!)

This incredible kitchen features a double sink integrated into “all in one”. I would love to be able to source such a beauty new, but I’m certain this must be a rare vintage find. I found this photo over at Lily G

With a double sink like the one above, I can have a dishwasher on either side of the sink. This would be a great “clean up center” for our kitchen. Hmmm…I have two children and two sinks! Perfection!

OR…just one sink in the main kitchen and the other in the scullery. Like this next photo:

In the picture above you can get a peek into this house’s scullery. It is the little room in the far left of the picture. It’s a great room to have when dirty pots and pans are piling up and guests are wanting to socialize in the kitchen. Pop the dirty dishes in there and close the door!! It also can serve as a place to store extra dishes like serving platters or other items not used every day. I’ll go into more detail about my plans for our scullery.

Plank Walls

I know what your thinking…plank walls are a need? Yes, they are a need!! I must have this look in my kitchen design. Every time I open a picture on my computer and see this style I get so excited. And I want to be excited about my kitchen.

The texture created by planks on the walls, ceiling and floors just adds interest. And without being too fussy. It’s classic!

This glorious design pictured below is by Ms. Phoebe Howard. She is an extremely talented woman whom I refer to as my “hero”.

This kitchen looks like it has a range by Viking. You can visit their company HERE. They offer a large selection of cooking equipment. And with a selection of paint colors, you can create a kitchen that is truly your own!

Waterfall Counter Top

A waterfall countertop (also referred to as-risers) adds a modern element to a kitchen. Friend”s of my ours just completed their house in South Sound, Grand Cayman. I have yet to ask for the opportunity to interview them and bring you all the stunning detail. Their kitchen features a wonderful open plan with an island that has a waterfall countertop just like the one below. Only I believe the material they used was quartz.

The countertop can just spill over the edge a little, like the cutting board pictured above. Or you can take it right down to the floor. I think it is a timeless look that delivers the modern edge at the same time!

This is the finished result. Gorgeous!

Last waterfall countertop pic(promise). But I wanted to show you one done on part of an island.

This one appears to be an extension of the countertop to allow people to pull up to the island on a stool.

Social seating for 4 at the Island

I realized, only recently, that I needed to have seating for 4 people at our kitchen island. And so many times have I been visiting a friend where we are all enjoying a nice visit while in the kitchen. But when seated at an island where the seats are side by side in a long row. You either have to lean in or out to converse with the person at the far end. Then there is the cook! She or he is left standing on the other side.

I say lets there be seating on BOTH sides of the island. And here are my inspirations to prove it.

Pendant Lighting

This design by Phoebe Howard is laid out in a similar way to my current design. Though, I may omit the upper cabinets, the range is centered between two windows and the dining table is set just off the kitchen.

Windows and Lights

When working in the kitchen you just can’t go wrong by having lots of light. But not glaring light. I have seen a couple of kitchen’s that have sparked desire for having more windows and natural light in our kitchen. And it is making me think about adding a couple of windows.

My last example of a light infused kitchen is actually one of my favorite’s. I love it for it’s rustic yet modern design. It is Meg Ryan’s kitchen in her Martha’s Vineyard home. The kitchen in the above photo from Southern Living is what brings me back to my original plan every time. There is something about the kitchen that just grabs me. I know I love the lack of upper cabinets. I love the custom vent hood the builder created in this kitchen as well. And can you believe the entire project is done with IKEA products?! Yes, you read that correctly. I mean, I love IKEA. But most of the kitchen’s I fall in love with are custom” this and that” and usually bust my budget. And can you spy the “waterfall style kitchen counter!!

Build VS Buy....

Good morning Y'all,
My hubby and I traveled to Charleston last week. While he was busy in the office, I was busy looking at local real estate.

No, I have not given up on our dream home. On the other hand, the housing market in the USA has continued to take a nose dive and we decided it would be responsible of us to take a look at homes already built. Especially ones that exceeded our expectations at prices well below our cost to build.

So I ask, what would you do? Build the dream home to your exacting specifications. OR..buy something "close to perfect" and then add your personal touch??

Now....that being said.....here is my design board in progress, for our kitchen. Either in Magnolia House or a purchased one.

Are you a “Tileaholic”?

Well, I was recently on the hunt for tile that looks like wood. A friend of mine here on Grand Cayman Island has purchased a luxury condo on seven mile beach. She loves the look of wood flooring. But the catch is…..here on the island, storms can wash right through a place. Not to mention the humidity levels can sore. And then you’ve got wet feet coming into your house after a long hard day on the beach! (haha)

So during my search I was lucky to find a discount tile source that is also high end!! Yep, you read that correctly.

Let me share with you the Mission Stone and Tile Company. They are located in Nashville, TN. (oh, what a perfect excuse to visit my brother in-law)

This room features these beautiful tiles. Can you believe it isn’t wood?? I think I would go a set further and recommend placing a heating element under the tile. Just to add a bit of warmth to further create the “feeling” of wood flooring.

They recently did a post on this wonderful tile. You can read all about it HERE.

Plywood Flooring Review!

I have been asked to review my post about plywood floors! Yes, you heard that right. I was first introduced to the idea by fellow blogger, Laurie from Frugal Farmhouse Design.

And who in their right mind doesn’t want to explore money saving options when remodeling or building a home? Well, lets just say this project is certainly interesting enough to take notes.

I have done some research since I first posted about plywood floors. There are many different grades and types of wood used to make plywood.

For example, Baltic Birch is a type of plywood that comes from the Baltic regions (Russia). It is very smooth, free of imperfections and strong. It is a premium wood that isn’t cheap. It is used to make cabinets, for example.

Laurie and her husband used regular standard grade 4’x8’ sheets of plywood; 1/4” thick, purchased at Home Depot for under $20! You can read all about it and get her DIY directions HERE!

Here are some of the looks you could create on the cheap! Just imagine??!! Plank walls, plank floors, plank everything!!

Frugal Farmhouse’s Plywood Flooring Before and After

I often give my father a call when I have house materials questions and asked his opinion about plywood used for flooring. His thoughts were the grade of wood would be your first concern. The plywood needs to be smooth and free of serious voids. The wood should also be able to accept and hold paint well. He recommended the wood be sanded, primed and then painted. Even he couldn’t believe how great they look.

I thought about what my very first post of 2011 should feature. I knew it would have to include some amazing interior design! That was a no brainer…..But who should deserve the honor??

Let me just say that I am the one who is honored!!! I proudly introduce to you,

I personally guarantee you will LOVE the design magic you are about to see! I can hardly believe the talent of this firm! Their design style is like my own, looking into a mirror! I hope to take a trip one day to meet the remarkable people behind such work.

Plank walls AND glam!!

The classic look of grey painted walls with the punch of yellow in the room….freshness achieved!

You can be certain that the lucky client of this pantry has more than enough space for everything. No longer does utility mean dark and ugly, that’s for sure!

I own this very console table! I love the idea. I think I might use vessel sinks instead. Or keep the table in my family room instead? We’ll see.

I just am in love with grey lately. And these floors get my heart racing! How about the stairway?? Cool!

Good things come to those who wait!! (1st Floor Plan)

I am a firm believer that good things come to those who wait. It is a belief my father taught me from a very young age. And to this day he has always been right! Well, we will be getting ready to move back to the United States in a couple months! We have been living in Grand Cayman for nearly a year. It has been a wonderful experience and very relaxing.

But let the fun begin I say!! 2011 will be the year we build our first house. (and last…) We had to put the project on hold for a year. And let me tell you how ready I am to get started. So there will be TONS of photos as the project begins. From the cutting of the ribbon ceremony to the clearing of the land and on and on.

I have been collecting some inspirational photo’s that I want to apply to the final design plan. I’ll be sharing them all with you here. So PLEASE leave me your comments and opinions. For example: Maybe there is a feature in your kitchen that you thought of and think everyone should include it in their design. I would be very grateful for any help.

So lets get this party started!!!!

Here is our 1st floor plan as it is currently planed. Well, after nearly 2 years of looking at it….I think I would like to make a few changes. Lets start with the laundry room/mud room.

Our architect has designed a mini foyer area at the back of the house. Our house was designed to allow for a private entry to the garage behind the house. There is also a covered walkway that connects the house to the garage. Visitors who park in our driveway will enter through the back of the house. My concern was having to keep the laundry room super tidy for visitors. I have spent many hours tweaking this thought and I have come up with a few ideas. Here are some of the “needs” for the space.

Locker Room

This is a design I found on Houzz.com created by Charlie Simmons Design. I would love to create a “locker room” to contain my busy family’s things.

I love the shutter style doors in the photo above. And a little catch all door for each family member! Brilliant!

Here is an option for locker storage with doors to hide away the clutter.

Storage, convenience and laundry machines

Here is a laundry room I found at Velvet and Linen (my favorite blog!) It is from the 219 North Cliffwood House. The features I love most about this room are: an island for folding, lower cabinets with marble countertop, front loading washer and dryer with countertop, open shelving and a deep farmhouse sink.

Seating

I’m sorry, I didn’t save the source of this picture. What I love about the room is the color palette. White is the perfect backdrop for a room designed to get things clean….don’t you think. And then add a few of your favorite colors to add interest. It looks like a soapstone countertop was used. What a perfect pairing to the stone floor with bits of grey. And last but most importantly, I adore the bead board walls. They create that relaxed Southern Style I am after.

Bulletin board/Kids “bragging zone”

I found this idea over at Ella and Baba. This is an area where the family can visit to find out what time a lesson is scheduled for, how well someone did on their last test or just a spot to display their latest masterpiece!

Scullery/Pantry

I found this beauty over at Decorati created by Mick Degiulio. While it is a little on the fancy side I love its functionality. You have plenty of storage for dishes and goods. And you have a clean up area reminiscent of a historic scullery where dirty dishes can be hidden from guests view.

Powder Room

Yes, another gorgeous room found in the 219 North Cliffwood House from Brooke at Velvet and Linen.

So lets review what I need to have in my laundry/mudroom! Locker/storage, laundry machines, island, iron board, seating, open shelves for display, pantry/scullery, powder room and cleaning supply closet!

Now how am I going to fit everything I “need” into a space of 14’x20’8”??

Well, I’ve managed to fit everything in and hopefully create the “master multi-functional room” of all time!

Please forgive the “raw” nature of the 3D renderings. Most all the shelving should be floor to ceiling and built in. But my current program won’t allow me to draw them to scale. I know it’s ruff. But I think I’m getting somewhere!!

Could “Shaker Style” be replaced by “Modern Shingle Style”?

I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday! Now that things have calmed down a bit I am excited to share my latest find! These wonderful houses and designs are all done by Charlie Simmons of Charlie & Co. Design. I found him in the Houzz.com design file found here!

He has this particular set of pictures labeled as Modern Shingle Style 1 and 2. As I am a huge fan of shaker style I was immediately drawn to his work. Take a look at these stunning yet minimalistic designs.

How lovely these neutrals look on the house above. I am really starting to warm up to grey and white.

I would describe this style and clean and neat. Uncluttered. Very comfortable. Easy living.

Christmas in the South

This gorgeous image of a Low country house all decked out for Christmas got my attention! And the beautiful wreaths are made with magnolia leaves! It is my pleasure to introduce you to Dave! I met him over at Southern Living.

Southern Living recently introduced us to Dave who shows you just how to make this Magnolia wreath Here!

My family and I spent our very first Low country Christmas in Charleston, SC. The year was 2006 and I was a new mom with our daughter who was 6 months old. I was also going to be another new mom to our second child! I had become pregnant much sooner than we had expected! And our recent relocation to Charleston could not have come at a worse time….so I thought!

Southern folk really are a special breed. They welcome you into their homes and their hearts. They love to entertain friends and family. And they truly are the kindest, most honest people you’ll ever meet. Our family was made to feel to welcome by so many kind people that year and I will never forget how loved those people made me and my family feel. I made friends that year that I know I will have for many many years to come. In fact I made a best friend for life. Her name is Joy. She and her family will be just down the street from us when we finish building our house.

Here are some Christmas photo’s that bring fond memories to life and remind me of how Christmas is done in the South.

The popular monogram! You’ll find it every where and I love it!

This wreath sprayed with white flocking spray brings some snow to the South! This one looks like it is hung on a gas lantern. You’ll find these gracing many homes in Charleston. I have 2 at home in storage just waiting to be hung on our new house!

Wreaths hung on wainscoting is lovely sight in the South.

The photo above is the Southern Living Idea House for 2010. It is located in Senoia Georgia. You can read all about it HERE! Tours are being held through December 12th!

The wreaths on the windows are from The Magnolia Company. (Oh how I LOVE this company) Here are a couple of my favorites on my wish list.

Yet another fabulous Design Team!

Bear Hill Interiors

First a shout out to Estate of Things. To send a warm thank you for sharing the wonderful works of Bear Hill Interiors. On occasion I open a designers portfolio and the entire thing just sings to me. Well, this is exactly what Bear Hill Interiors portfolio did. Their designs have gorgeous clean timeless taste. You’ll find lots of delicate aqua blue, crisp white and great texture to add to the mix. Take a look at what I love!

I am in love with the wall paper covering the ceiling and 1/4 way down the wall. The remaining wall appears to be wainscoting which is family friendly-durable! The hall light is honestly special in that it is unique and plays with the pattern of the wall paper. Gorgeous entryway that is the perfect appetizer to the rest of the house.

My families house plan has a great room very similar to this one above. Here it is below. With nearly 50 ft in length and 20ft wide, it is a huge space. I am inspired by the seating arrangement done by Bear Hill. Lots of opportunity for family and friends to visit comfortably while enjoying easy conversation.

If these rooms are so satisfying to look at, just think how they must be to live in. Gorgeous!

I was so excited when I discovered Krista’s talent today. Even her home page is unique and cheerful. It perfectly introduces her creative design sense. She grew up in Southern California. She was fortunate to have a talented mother who owned a consignment store and brought new life to old objects.

My Home Office and Guest Bedroom-All in One!!

The big question…..can you have it all? I say YES!

I have been struggling with the design of my home office for a while now. All because I need to share it with our guests! You see, this room needs to serve two purposes. 95% of the time it will be my personnel home office. The remaining 5% will allow guests to have a bedroom to sleep in and feel welcome.

So I thought about buying a Murphy bed, but I didn’t care for the way the cabinets looked when they are closed and not in use. I am also not crazy about the metal supports the bed rests on. (sorry, I’m not sure where this photo is from)

But today I was flipping through one of my favorite books, The smart approach to Home Decorating, by Creative Homeowner and came across a picture that sparked an idea.

A roll out guest bed!

Here is the photo that gave me the idea.

The next picture is a section of our master plans showing the details of the guest bedroom.

So let me try and explain. I’ll include a couple of very rough sketches that I did while I was watching my kids play outside today.

The sketch above shows a wall section of where the bed would bed sitting when rolled and put away. It would be sitting in what is now planned to be storage. This room was planned to really be an unfinished “bonus space”.

This next sketch is showing where the bed will roll in and out of the room. Please keep in mind I was outside keeping my eye on my 3 and 4 year old children playing on the beach. So the scale and placement of the bed is way off (to be kind). But none the less, it is an idea in its very early stages.

The bed will be built on a platform that will rest on casters so it can be completely rolled out of the storage area and into the room where it will rest in front of the built in shelving. This is the wall just beside the guest bath. So my desk area will have to be kept very tidy the days that the room will serve guests. Those three large windows look out onto our back yard and some lovely live oak trees.

Here are some great caster wheels I found that would be “kind” to my wood floors and quiet too! You can find them HERE at Caster City.

This next sketch shows how the bed will look when it is stored away. The orange arrow is pointing to the faux drawer fronts or the foot board of the bed. I have also drawn in some built in shelving.

Here I have the bed and my desk highlighted in blue to show you where the bed will be rolled and locked into place when needed.

I’m even thinking I’ll have room for a small sofa to place in front of the bed when it’s rolled away! Perfect seating for family and friends and maybe even a client or two!

Well, there you have it! A brilliant idea or maybe a little crazy. But the wheels are turning and as always, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Doggy Sink!

I found this sink at overstock.com for $99.99

It reminds me of a doggy bone. What do you think? Well, that sparked the thought of having a permanent doggy bowl for our Sammy. And I’ll install it in our laundry room off the kitchen.

So I think I’ll pair the sink with this faucet:

I’m also thinking I’ll consult my vet to have her give me an opinion on elevating the sink a bit. Sam is quite a large dog so it might make drinking a bit easier for him.

I found these elevated pet feeders over at Whiner and Diner. A super shopping site for Eco-Chic Pet Accessories. I am hoping I’ll be able to custom order one to Sam’s new sink and also hide the plumbing.

So what do you think? Am I turning into another crazy dog owner? I know my husband is going to think I’ve lost it.

I had to laugh at myself tonight. My husband is away on business. So it’s just me and my laptop. Well, when I opened up this article and saw this kitchen……you can imagine the look on my face.

A tutorial on: How to change your Blog Header AND have fun too!!

Items you will need to install on your computer:

Snag it- This software allows you to capture any image online and copy it to your computer. Visit Techsmith here to download a free trial. (I promise you will LOVE this feature.)

Colour Lovers- This site is chuck full of colour, design and inspiration. You’ll need to head over to Colourlovers.com here. Become a member for free (just like blogger) and your……

Ready to get started!!

1. Sign into your new Colour lovers account and then click on the “create” tab, shown below. A drop box will appear, then click on pattern.

2. The following page will appear:

3. Browse the patterns until you find one you like and click on it. Here is one I chose for this tutorial.

4. Next click on the lower left hand corner grey square with the pink line above it. (like pictured above) A color grid will come up. Continue doing the same thing on each square until you are finished designing your very own pattern. Here is how mine turned out.

5. Now click on the get this pattern image for your screen. I have a red arrow pointing to this below.

6. Your image will open in a new page full size.

7. Click the right button on your mouse or laptop and scroll to the “open with” tab- then click on Snag it editor. You can then capture the image.

8. In snag it you can convert the image to jpeg easily. The most upper left hand corner has a circle will light blue lines in it. Click on this and a menu drops to reveal the tab “convert image”. Just follow it from there. Once you have it in jpeg format you can then save it to your picture file on your computer.

9. I then opened my newly designed print from colourlovers.com with the program on my computer called Paint. And then, my fellow bloggers, let the creativity flow!! Here is my end result.

10. Next save your new design in your picture file. Open up your blogger dashboard and click on the design tab. Your “add and arrange page elements” will appear. Click on the “edit” tab located on your header (title). The “configure header” page will pop up. Click on the “search file” to find your new Blog header. You have to also check off the “resize to fit” and “instead of title and description” boxes. These two options will allow your new header to fit perfectly in your blogger header.

I hope I haven’t left anything out. One thing I might add is I use Window’s Writer to create all of my posts. I love using writer. It really makes my life easy.

Now I just have to work on not changing the style of my blog too often. It’s funny, I even ended up loving the blogger tutorial header design.

Can you believe it! I am so excited I can hardly find the right words to explain how impressed I am. This was created by Lori and her husband and she posted it on her wonderful blog Frugal Farmhouse Design!

The possibilities are endless! Who says this landing by Hutker Architectural Firm, could not be done with plywood and then painted. Could we really tell the difference??

Soundproofing your House!

We are visiting family this week and we have been having a terrific time. There is one tiny problem though. The guest bedroom we sleep in is downstairs directly under the main living area. If we go to bed early or someone wakes up early in the morning; then we can hear them walking above us LOUD and CLEAR! This got me thinking about how we could prevent this in our new house. I found a wealth of information at The Super Soundproofing Co. so I thought I’d share the info with you all.

So…. if you love the look and feel of wooden floors like this room featured by Southern Accents.

Storage, storage, storage. This bathroom design delivers! I love the built in with room enough for all that we seem to need in our bathrooms.

Love love love the boards on the walls! And if you take a really close look at the sink, it is set into a shelf wall that has been built out. It is also serving as a counter top to set things on. Genius!

Take a tour of this Low Country Cottage

Come and take a look at this Low Country Cottage I found while sourcing some amazing products at the Kohler online site. Charleston SC is the place I love to call home. And cottages like these just add to the areas welcoming laid back appeal. This cottage is located in the lovely area of Palmetto Bluff, SC.

A front sitting porch is a must in the South. After all, how would you give a friendly hello ya’ll if you weren’t outside lounging on your front porch?

This kitchen has all the bells and whistles. Not to mention timeless style! The back splash is done with octagonal marble wall tile. Sarah Richardson recently remodeled one of her homes and used penny tile on the back splash. I love the look. It adds texture and interest to the room.

The kitchen open right up to the dining room and joining family room. So popular a style these days. I love how the design team painted the upper cabinets in this kitchen a dark charcoal grey and then repeated that color in the dining room on the built in hutch. Lovely don’t you think?

Perfect! I was hoping to get a better view of the kitchen range and hood. And take a look at the back splash that rises almost all the way to the ceiling. I took the tour of historical houses last year in downtown Charleston. Unfortunately they don’t let you take pictures. (I personally think they should consider it). Anyway, there was one kitchen that was unforgettable. They had covered all the walls, counter top to ceiling with full slabs of marble! It was crazy stunning! And the marble was white with just a hint of grey/blue veining traveling through it.

Now, back to this dining area. The table is 12 feet long and has room for plenty of guests. We usually have another family over for dinner and how great it would be to have everyone gathered in one area. I just love the set of three lanterns over the table. A wow factor!

The living room is casual and welcoming. What a great idea to have four little ottomans pushed together to form one. They can be separated and used by anyone sitting in the room. Notice the white walls and trim. They allow the furniture and accent pieces to make the statement.

The master bath is well equipped with nothing but the best from Kohler.

The bath tub is Kohler's Tea-for-Two 5' Soaking Tub. I just love the idea of being able to soak in a deep large tub just like this one. Our family house plans have windows just like the one’s beside the tub in this bath. And I love the idea of hanging a little fancy light from the ceiling of the water closet. I was just in Pottery Barn today and they have all their furniture and lighting that has been discontinued on sale at 50% off. I saw a star lantern very similar to the one in the above bath. Very cute.

Master bedroom with coastal details. And is that a sitting room opening up to the back porch! Love it!

Guest Bath. Am I the only one who thinks this bath may be even better than the master bath? The free standing tub by Kohler is a $7,000 + feature! Isn’t it beautiful?! And I love the shaker style vanities with the under mounted sinks, wide spread faucets.and sconce lighting. My only concern are the wood floors in the baths. I love the look. But will they hold up to the constant water being dripped on them?

Guest Bedroom. OK, confirmed! This bedroom would be my master get a way! I love the natural elements. It is relaxing to look at.

Twin Suite. I just love the fabric covered head boards with reading lights set into them. Very creative touch.

Twin Bath. Simple and neat!

White on white color scheme. Clean and timeless!

Bunk room bath. Here we see the shaker style vanity. Love that look. And I adore the nautical lighting.

Bunk Room. This is an additional family room. I am assuming it is upstairs. We have in our house plans a space very similar to this one. Seeing it all decorated gets my heart beating with excitement. Ah, a casual room meant for family movies, play or just reading a book. What a

great space. This large sectional is going to be added to my design file. Tons of seating! Perfect!

Powder Room. I love Kohler’s Memoir's Pedestal Sink.

Laundry Room. Complete with a Kohler faucet and farm house sink!

Back Porch. Complete with wicker rocking chairs. I am in love!

This cottage is located in Palmetto Bluff, SC. If you are ever down our way this area is a must to see and stay.

A New Orleans Cutie!!

This little gem of a house is certainly a perfect place to call home.

And can you believe it’s a shotgun cottage built inside a South Carolina factory and later shipped off to its new owner! Amazing! I found a tour of this cottage over at My Home Ideas.

What a terrific little mix of traditional with modern. The wall mounted faucet pours onto a flat surfaced modern sink that spills over and into the surrounding basin. What lovely texture the rattan roman shade adds.

Living room wonder! OK…I know I’ve said this before but I want…..no sorry, I NEED to have our walls covered with wood. I’m in love!

An eclectic dining room design. As comfortable as it is unique and interesting.

This pantry was surrounded by chalk board paint and then topped off with an old salvaged bank door! How neat. And even better….tucking much needed pantry items just steps away from the main kitchen.

Household office with custom built in cabinets and open shelves.

The master bedroom has a super neat faux fireplace. And even though it doesn’t house a real fire it adds a cozy little seating area and a great mantel to decorate.

Master closet. Decorated with gorgeous wall paper and a chandelier make it a glamorous little dressing room!

Shelves finished with trim work give this laundry room plenty of storage in style. After all, in my household the laundry room is a place I spend a lot of my time in. I plan on making it a fun happy place to get family chores done. I’ll call it the “woman cave”. (well, one of my caves anyway……heehee)

Girl’s Bedroom Ceiling. The designer hand painted this medallion and glued it to the ceiling. So cute and clever!

Well I not sure if your thinking what I am. But can you believe how fabulous a shotgun house can be??

Well, first off I would like to send a huge thank you to House of Turquoise for posting the spectacular sea foam green master bath found in Hamptons Cottages and Gardens 2006 Idea House. This spectacular bath took my breath away! And behind all this genious is the very talented design firm- Mabley Handler! I am in love! Seriously!

Coastal Flair!

Southern Living just published an article titled Timeless Coastal Charm. It makes me miss home more than ever! Oh how I can hardly wait to return home to Charleston!

I am in love with the subtle pale blue they used on the shutters. And what a beautiful brick path leading to the double front door.

Here the family created an outdoor living space on their front porch!! In the south the front porch is where you sit with friends and family all while greeting passing neighbors on the street.

Here is a closer look at the shutters. I have in our house plans the idea of using the fixed shutters used here on the top portion of the house. And I must agree with Southern Living’s author. The shutters not only provide privacy but when they are closed during a rainy day there is something magical that happens.

One of my all time favorite features. Horizontal boards used on the walls. Here they are reclaimed cypress. Lovely!

I think they did a fabulous job with their kitchen. Notice the walls done with the cypress boards. I must admit that I would change the leather bar stools for something different and lighter. Their dark color grabbed my eye to quickly when I first looked at this picture.

A swinging day bed painted with a neutral grey. Then topped with sea inspired pillows. And what a cute dog!

Well I would say this home has been done in a very tasteful and timeless style. It will be one I save in my design file for sure.

Blissful Bathroom Fittings!

This is just one of the inspirational photos I found at the Samuel Heath web site. You’ll be sure to find some fantastic bath fittings and maybe a few bits of inspiration. I just love the louver doors on this bath vanity. Not to mention the super faucet!

What a darling bathroom! The backsplash and wall faucet is simply divine! I can see this in my little girls bathroom for sure!

Here are some of my top picks from his bath faucets!

I would choose Chrome plated for the added sparkle.

I am really hoping we’ll be able to have a wall mounted tub fixture very similar to this one. I have to have the shower handle option!!

I hope you’ll take a look at this terrific manufacturer. They have been in business since 1825! I think they may just know a thing or two about quality fixtures. You?

My favorite Kitchen !

House Beautiful's article titled 50 Kitchen Ideas from the Barefoot Contessa holds a wealth of information. The article is also complimented with gorgeous pictures of one spectacular kitchen. The 2009 Kitchen of the Year!

Kraftmaid’s cabinets in dove white.

Two dual fuel Viking 30” ranges. Ina’s favorite combination- electric oven for baking and gas burners for cooking! Sounds just right to me!

Ina decants her spices into equally sized jars. I am also very type “A” when it comes to my spice storage. Laying them on their side on an angle like the photo above is the only way to store spices. So easy to find the one you need and neatly displayed.

Kraftmaid’s bread bin. Super neat idea. Where do you currently store your bread. Ours is out on the counter in a basket at the moment.

Create a bedroom to “Retreat” to for the night!

If I achieve just one goal when we build our house it will be the creation of a bedroom worthy of my loving husband. I want the room to be relaxing, romantic and soothing. A special place in the house where we can recharge our batteries and wake up the next morning with renewed energy.

I discovered James Michael Howard while reading a post about bathrooms by Simplified Bee. (a must read blog, if you enjoy my blog).

This bedroom is relaxing to look at. Could you imagine how you would feel sleeping in it? Sublime!!!!

When I found out that House Beautiful announced the designer for this year's Kitchen of the Year, I thought to myself. Wow, this designer must be something else! What I mean, is last year’s Kitchen of the Year was so perfect in every way! So how in the world is there going to be an even better kitchen design?

That is when I thought about doing my own research on this designer named Jeff Lewis. And here is what I learned.

First of all he has his own web site, Jeff Lewis Design. He is the star of Bravo’s Docu-Reality series Flipping Out. He has 20 plus years of design experience. And let me tell you…..his work says it ALL!!!

Here are my favorites from his portfolio found in the "gallery" at Jeff Lewis Design. I’m telling you he is one crazy awesome designer! Good choice House Beautiful! The suspense is killing me….but I know the 2010 House Beautiful Kitchen of the Year with be something to be seen. Just wondering if anyone over at the magazine would like me to do an independent review and fly my in from Cayman??

I have been feeling a bit under the weather…

I apologize for my recent lack of blogging. I caught a full on strep throat and severe cold from my daughter. Boy did it ever take me down! I have missed so much in the last week. I haven’t had the energy to blog, go to the gym, swim or play with my children. It has been awful. I finally said enough is enough and went to a wonderful doctor here on the island, Dr. Granger. She gave me some meds and away I went. I am feeling 70% better now. I am praying I’ll wake up in the morning a new woman.

Anyway, I’m back!! And it is a great place to be…..

I’ve been thinking a lot about convenience and storage in the kitchen since a mess was easily collected during my illness. So I plan on doing some serious kitchen research. After all, when the cabinet maker comes along and wants to know what it is that I want in our kitchen….well, I’d better have some answers, right??

House Beautiful is definetly one of my “go to” sources for decorating know how. Here is a storage solution of theirs I completely agree with. Store your every day dishes on full display. This way they have to be put back neatly. Save under the counter storage for pots and pans……and lets not ever forget those unsightly plastic storage containers!

You’ll recognize this beauty created by Robert Stilin. He re created Ina Garten’s East Hampton Barn Kitchen for the 2009 Kitchen of the Year. There are many details I want to incorporate into my kitchen. But one really great idea is utilizing the “bench” side of the kitchen island. Here they have place cupboard doors and behind them, store items such as un-used seasonal items or infrequently used kitchen wears.

Why not build a Vacation Home to live in Year Round!

While living out of the country, my family and I have come to realize that we enjoy simple, relaxed and very casual vacation style living. So I thought; Why not build our family home just like it were a vacation house?? YES! That’s it! The key to my families well being! Just think…after a hectic day at the office, my husband retreats to his “vacation home”. After a hectic day at school, my children retreat to their “vacation home”. And after a hectic day of studying, cleaning, grocery shopping, and all that I do. I too retreat with my family to “Our Vacation Home”.

So there you have it. My plan! Building our dream home and decorating it with a vacation house vibe!

I have found a very inspirational design firm called, Historical Concepts. They have two locations, Peachtree City, Georgia and Atlanta, Georgia. They are the team responsible for the 2009 Coastal Living Idea Cottage found in the I’on neighborhood in Charleston, SC. I toured this spectacular cottage. It is gorgeous and yet tastefully simple. Here are some of there other projects that have given me the inspiration to live every day like I am on vacation!! I hope you enjoy!

Watch Tower Cottage Watersound, Florida

This vantage point allows a perfect view not only of the kitchen, but also of the stair railing. Simplicity is “my key”. I want to move right in!

Oh my, my….there are so many things to love about this casual dining area. I love the dining table and the country style chairs. I also adore the chandelier and the sconces on the wall. Then the french doors with the horizontal paned windows…striped area rug….and barrel vaulted ceiling!!

Here in the guest room we see boarded walls and ceiling! Love the dark metal fan!

Camp Callaway Cabins-Pine Mountain, Georgia

This is a gorgeous little kitchen. My eye is drawn to the kitchen island seating and then to the style of the island. Notice the narrow leg holding part of the islands counter and then the beaded board used to decorate the backing. Very “shaker style” and simply lovely.

Shaker style doors are used throughout this cottage. And here is one on a rustic looking track system. Beyond the doorway is a peak into the adjoining bathroom with beaded board walls placed horizontal fashion. Super casual and neat.

I love the stair case with the very neat and simple newel post. Again, shaker fashion. Then notice all of the wood used on the walls. Perfect!

What is a vacation home without built in captain style beds? My little guy would love these!

And the last picture from this super cute cottage is the screened in back porch. While we love the outdoors, we do not love the mosquito’s Charleston can sometimes have during the summer months. This porch and its casual table call out for some Southern BBQ and sweet tea.

Strickland Vance Beach Cottage

This gem is located in Watercolor, Florida. Architectural details such as its corrugated metal roof and clapboard siding are what the design team of Historical Concepts describe as “the charm and easy simplicity of a early 1900s home, that reflect the Florida “Cracker” vernacular”.

Cotton Tree Cottages-Grand Cayman Tour

These cottages, located in the area of West Bay on Grand Cayman island are tastefully appointed. There are only 4 cottages on the property. The fresh water swimming pool is just steps away from the cottages. And with daily maid service included as well as in suite catering you may just never want to leave this little gem of a getaway! Also included is a complimentary shuttle to local restaurants, beaches and sightseeing attractions.

Here is one of the four cottage rentals. It’s design just calls out to you, “relax and come inside”. I just adore the color blue they used. And even better than that, my favorite roofing material, metal!

The interior is clean and modern. It’s simple laid back living to allow you to leave your your world behind and live “island style”.

Colors of orange, yellow and cream are used throughout the main living area. You’ll find all of these colors and more in many of the flowers and wild life found on the island. Unique art pieces from around the world decorate the space. And dark stained wooden tables, which are very Caribbean, are seen throughout.

The kitchen is well appointed with everything you are accustomed to.

Enjoy glorious sea views from your master bedroom painted in a lovely blue reflecting the color of the sea located steps away!

The bathroom has a beautiful two person bath with a joining open shower. Blue,copper and beige glass tiles decorate the space while huge cream subway style tiles cover the walls.
